The reliable source for an Egyptian postal code is Egypt Post, the national postal operator. Its information and offices can confirm which five-digit code covers a district. Since many Egyptians do not use the code in daily life, it is common to need to look it up before filling in an international form or a checkout.

Start with the governorate and district

Egypt's codes follow the administrative structure, so searching starts with the governorate, then the city and the district. Always give the governorate, because district and street names repeat in different cities and the code depends on the exact area. In Greater Cairo, where Cairo and Giza are adjacent, the governorate is easy to get wrong, which also changes the beginning of the code. The structure is explained in Egypt postal code format explained.

    Use documents and the recipient

Ask the recipient for a recent letter, utility bill or courier slip. If a code is printed there, it is the one used by the delivery network. Businesses frequently publish their full address on their invoices or contact page.

    Verify the code

A few simple checks reduce errors:

    • The code has exactly five digits, with no letters, spaces or hyphens.
    • Its leading digits fit the governorate you expect.
    • The district name in the lookup matches the address, not a similarly named one in another city.
    • The recipient or a second source agrees.

    Newer areas

New cities and new compounds around the larger cities may not be easy to find by name in older lists. In that case, use the code of the nearest or surrounding postal area, make the written address as complete as possible, and ask Egypt Post or the courier to confirm. For how to write the written part, see how to write an Egyptian address.

    If you are still unsure

Do not invent a code. Leave the field out if the form allows it, or put the best verified value and add a phone number and landmark. Local couriers in Egypt frequently rely on a phone call.

Where the real problem is the exact building, not the postal area, a map-based reference is more helpful. A UPCS code (prefix EG, as in EG-XXXX-XXXX) marks a 3 m by 3 m cell and can be sent with the order. It is not a postal code and is not issued by Egypt Post, so it is an addition to the address and not a substitute for it.
